He grew up between the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, and an army camp in Wiltshire where he and his mother lived during the war.
His very first role was that of Sammy the Little Sweep in a school production of Let's Make an Opera.
His big break came after Gene Kelly spotted him on Broadway and asked him to audition for a part in the musical Hello, Dolly!
After 20 years of stage and screen success he took up the role of the Phantom. He performed the role 1,300 times and won both an Olivier Award and a Tony Award for his performance.
